Security Keys

Apple Account Access & Authentication

Optional

Consider using physical security keys for stronger protection against phishing and targeted account attacks.

What this setting does

Security Keys replace the six-digit verification codes normally used for Apple Account two-factor authentication with physical FIDO-certified security keys. This makes it much harder for an attacker to steal or trick you into providing your second authentication factor through phishing or social engineering.

Important notes

Security Keys require two-factor authentication and at least two compatible FIDO-certified security keys. Apple allows up to six keys to be associated with an account. All devices signed in to the Apple Account must also meet Apple's minimum software requirements.

Keep backup keys in separate secure locations. If you lose access to all of your trusted devices and all of your security keys, you could be permanently locked out of your Apple Account.

Security Keys are intended as additional protection against targeted attacks. They are not necessary for every user, which is why Clouds & Keys classifies them as Optional rather than Essential or Recommended.
